The Dundee Service Jam 2015 organisation team would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all jammers, contributors and sponsors who helped make the Global Service Jam in Dundee such a successful and energetic 48 hour learning experience.
This was our third Service Jam in the city and we really managed to put Dundee firmly on the map of creativity once again. Throughout the weekend, there was a great buzz generated through connecting digitally with other jams, including our ‘twin’ in Dresden (who thought we were developing a space ship service to Mexico – they weren’t far off!), our old faithful, and highly entertaining friends in Beirut, and we shared a more local ‘Scottish Breakfast’ with Glasgow and Aberdeen. Our jammers also engaged the community using intriguing research and engagement tools when they hit the streets of Dundee.
Over the weekend, impressive service prototypes were developed and shared with the world on Planet Jam, all while learning new service design tools. These included a travelling truck to foster creative opportunities for teenagers; a mobile science maker space; a solidarity network developed through the creation of up-cycled badges; and a service to help people figure out their ideal career path. Who would have thought all these could emerge from the greatly anticipated secret theme – an image of the making process of a paper fortune-teller!
We were very lucky to be able to make ourselves at home for the weekend within the wonderful Dundee MakerSpace in the Vision Building, and use some of its excellent facilities. Thanks especially to Grant Richmond for ensuring we had everything we needed to allow the Jam to run smoothly, and for setting up a spanking new website for us. Our bubbly guest MC, Urška Tičar, a final year DJCAD student, set the tone for an energetic weekend and shared her previous Jam experiences with us. A really helpful and insightful introduction to service design was provided by the knowledgeable Hazel White of Open Change. Jen Ballie of Design in Action dropped in to share her experiences on prototyping to get us off to a flying start of ‘doing, not talking!’. Hairdresser Holly Scanlan energised jammers through encouraging us to try her impressive hair manipulation techniques (surely a Global Service Jam first?!). And Kathryn Rattray, our photographer extraordinaire of Twisted Flax Photography, got right into the jam spirit by snapping the whole experience, and splashing it all over our social media sites to share around the globe.
We would also like to thank Design in Action, Open Change, Dundee MakerSpace, NEoN, Walkers Shortbread and Waxed Cotton by Halley Stevensons for their very generous sponsorship towards the likes of the space, food, drinks and materials. Without them the jam wouldn’t be the success that it was.
More Jam Anyone?
So, now that you’ve seen how it’s done, are you interested in organising a Jam yourself? There are two more Global Service Jam events taking place this year; GovJam, which aims to rock the public sector; and the Global Sustainability Jam, which focuses on issues of sustainability and the environment. If you are interested in contributing to one of these events, get in touch and we’ll try and connect you with other potential fellow organisers.
Spread the Jam!
A fantastic selection of photographs capturing the spirit of the weekend are now on our Facebook and Instagram accounts so we can relive our great memories of the Jam. We’d love to see any additional images you may have, so please feel free to share on any of our social media sites. As always, just remember to tag all photos with #gsjam and #gsjdundee.
You are also welcome to post comments on our website or Facebook page, or drop us a Tweet if you have posted any personal reflections about the Jam online. (Check out this great blog post by jammer ‘Marble Boy’ and also this fantastic Storify by fellow organiser, Ross Crawford.)
And finally, as a lasting reminder of the weekend, here’s Dundee Service Jam well and truly winning the Global Service Jam ‘Shake It Off’ challenge! And remember – YOU ARE THE JAM!
See you at GSJ Dundee 2016!
